Natural disasters happened all the time in the days of old, just as they do now. The difference between our time and thousands of years ago is that we now know what causes them. Back then, no one knew. As if the disaster itself wasn't scary enough, the people had to live with the fear of not understanding what was happening.
To make it easier on themselves, they came up with some ideas as to why these things were happening. With each new person telling the story, details changed. (Think of that "Telephone" game children play while sitting in a circle. By the time the whispered phrase travels back to the person who originally said it, it's completely different.) That's how all myths get started.
The flood myths that are found in every culture are easily explained. Every place in the world, at one time or another, has been flooded. People died and the survivors had to find a way to make sense out of what happened. So they came up with a plausible explanation and it grew over time.

Not always in myths do they occur, if I remember correctly, there have been quite a few big ones hitting Hawaii the last 50 years, not to mention the after-effects of Katrina and around the Sea of Japan.

Because in earlier times the world was from you to the horizon, and any flood was a majorly devastating thing.... except in Egypt where it helped to develop trigonometry and was a big help to farming.

The flood in that one could actually have taken place, but I think it's because water's deep and dark and scary if you don't know what's in it, and a humongo flood WOULD actually be scary if you don't know what to do.

B/c people way back then didn't have the modern science or technology that we have today so they use the myths to explain things. Just look at Greek mythology. Theres plenty of stories there to explain things. Like the changing of the seassons was b/c Demeters kid had to stay with Hades for three or four months. Thats how they explained winter.

Possibly because they are not myths. There have been fossils of fish, clams and other sea creatures found at the top of extrememly high mountains. The ONLY explanation is that the mountains must have, at one time, been under water.
