I'm not sure which "plant like protists" you mean, but the website below talks about the different kind of protists as well as some of the diseases they cause:

Dinoflagellates are plant-like protists that sometimes release toxins into the water, but most protist-bourne diseases are from the "animal like" ones.

Red tides refer to rapidly growing blooms of dinoflagellates, where the concentrations are so great that the water appears red. Some red tides can cause fish kills, either through anoxia or by the release of toxins; some of these toxins can be fatal to humans. Increased nutrient levels in coastal waters as a result of land runoff, pollution and aquaculture has resulted in eutrophic conditions in some places. Such conditions can produce algal blooms; the spread of toxic species by shipping has further increased the likelihood of toxic algal blooms.

I dont know anything about Biology, But Im just going to guess :) Im guessing its because only Fungi need what plants need to live. If I were a Fungi, I'd want all the food for myself. I do, even as a Human :) Get in MAI BELLY
