I know people who check to see if there is a ring on the other person's finger before they make a move. There's two sides to it. The first and obvious one is, no ring, means they're available. I have lots of guy friends who won't go after a girl if she's got a ring. They respect the fact that someone else cared a lot about that girl to give her a ring, and they're going to stay away from her because of it. They wouldn't do anything to destroy the relationship she's obviously spent a lot of time in developing. The other side to that is the guy who's just looking for instant gratification. He doesn't care if she's got a man, or if she's committed to someone else. He'll pursue her no matter what. This type of guy is a dog. He has no respect and no morals, and doesn't care about the other person enough to respect their committment to their significant other. If the girl gives in to them, she'll get hurt and ultimately destroy all trust and possibly the relationship she worked so hard to build with her significant other. I wear a claddagh (irish ring symbolizing love, loyalty and friendship) on my left hand. The heart turned out, it means that you're available. The heart turned in, means that your heart is taken. Mine's turned in. I've had guys hit on me, and I explain the ring and it's meaning to them, tell them I have a boyfriend, and they generally leave me alone. The ones that don't are bad news. I avoid them like the plague, because they're not worth knowing.
