For years I have wanted to do things which I never got done.
Right now I am in China, teaching. I came here with the hope
to get to know myself better here, but things are not working out.
I have a much smaller salary than I expected and cannot
even buy the things I need for my flat and so it is empty.

Some minutes ago, when taking a taxi I reacted stupidly, and am rather worried now (see quesiton on taxidrivers in Beiing)

Please some encouraging words.

you should first, calm down and calmly think what u should do. Since your in China, why not try and get out?, ad come to Canada or Britin or America, apply for an immigrant status.

How long have you been in China? It sounds like you are experiencing culture shock. What is your salary? You are in Beijing right? you should at least have a salary of 4,000 - 8,000 RMB (if your housing is included) if not, then should be almost double.

Just relax and roll with things.. If you cannot roll with things, you are destined for misery and prolongued unhappiness in China.

Chinese are very willing to help out foreigners in most situations, but if you make a Chinese person lose "Face" like you did with the taxi driver, the Chinese have a very unique way of making your life hell..

Culture shock is not an adequate reason for breaching a contract either.. So if you are teaching in China, and you break the contract cause you can't handle "China" well.. expect court or at the very least an expensive buy out option on your contract.

You went to China to find yourself? Just remember, "wherever you go, there you are!" Going to China to find yourself is like asking for directions to Mars.

At this point you have two options, quit and accept the penalties the school will throw at you, or do something I believe you have yet to do in your life which is to see this through to the end and discover that you have the perserverence to make this work despite the challanges you face. I promise you one thing, if you stick this out successfully, you'll find out something positive about yourself that will last a lifetime.. Quit, and you'll be quiting for the rest of your life.

Contact the folks over at journeyeast.org -they offer free consulting to teachers already in china who are experiencing exactly these types of issues.

By the way - what type of visa do you have, is this a legal employment or part time volunteer service you are doing?

I read back through some of your questions previously. Firstly, obviously all of this is just my opinion and in no way will i make the presumption that anything i can say will make your situation better but il try to ease your anxiety.
First of all you say for years you have wanted to do things and im presuming going to China and working in the teaching profession was one of them. Have your over all desires changed? or does it just seem hopeless at the moment? Why dont you sit down with a pen and a piece of paper and write down the things you want from life right now, only when you have identified what it is you want can you truly go after them. Do you still want to be in China? if so then start thinking about ways you can improve your immediate situation there, if not start thinking about how your going to get to where it is you want to be.
From your post i gather your suffering from anxiety and its not surprising it appears you have had much change in your life over a short period of time, however if your goals are the same as when you set out you cannot let this anixety prevent you from progression. As i said identifying what you want, writing that first thing down on your list of wants in life is the first step back to regaining control.
As for the taxi man try not to worry he has probably seen it many times before and although what i think you did was wrong its not for me to start rattling on about ethics you have asked for encouraging words and so il focus on them. Forget him and if you do see him again apologise prefusely, explain you were suffering from aniexty and pay the fare.

If you find your anxiety continues or you start feeling ongoing emotions of depression id recommend a visit to the doctor.

Good luck and all the best in whatever it is you decide to do

Yep i read the other question. Sounds like at was a daft thing to do, but dont worry

I doubt the taxi guy will ever see you again. If you stood up to him at the record show he will probably have got the message.

I was in China, and they are good people, willing to help!

Take it easy, make a phone call to a loved one and enjoy it!

Sort this wage thing out, IE basic living costs and compare to your wage, pheraps you need to change job, different school. People can live like this so you can. Good luck and enjoy, cause if you come home now you will regret!!!
