my 2000 ford ranger suddenly is having power steering trouble.
when turning the wheel , not under motion, the movement of the tires is real jerky, it will actually shake the front end of the truck.
while driving down the road, it doesnt do that, but it still feels funky.
the front end is solid, new wheel bearings, and just had it aligned.
i am thinking the power steering pump is crapping out, even though there are no leaks. i dont see any air bubles in the fluid, and the level is correct. good tight serpentine belt, which is also new. it has got me stumped. like i said the front end is tight.
any ideas? i dont want to replace the pump, if that is not the problem, but i cant imagine what else it could be at this point.
must be some motor heads out there who can help.
thanks.

as it turns out, the wheel bearings i had installed at a ford garage, were both blown out. they were installed 3,000 miles ago.
this is what was causing all the problems
with the steering.
so i then installed new bearings myself, and the truck is fine now.
afterwards i called the ford garage and voiced my opinion about the inept work done on my truck.
thanks though for all the answers.

It could be the pump or the rack and pinion or steering gear(box). The pump is the easiest to change but I don't think that's the problem.

It sounds like a rack and pinion unit that has worn to the danger level. These are expensive, but I would bet on this being the problem. I have had problems with rack and pinion on other vehicles that I owned (one nearly caused me to have a wreck). Get a reputable mechanic to check it out for you.

Before replacing pump....Get someone to turn wheel lock to lock while you look under hood..sometimes belt it TOO tight and it jumps on the pullys..

This could be the pump, It could also be the rack and pinion. I would bet rack and pinion.
