The TV news is not truly news; it is sensationalism and entertainment. There is a lot of material that is not important but grabs the attention. Even the stories that are important are presented in a way to draw you in emotionally. There is little or no effort at objectivity, as this may be considered dull. The purpose is not to inform but to make money.
No doubt it is the sensationalism that is depressing you. It is a normal reaction, though not everybody reacts the same way. I do not watch TV news; I get my news elsewhere. The internet can be good for this.
If you don't enjoy the TV news, there is no real reason to watch it.

When I was younger (I am now 60), I was an avid newspaper reader, and watched most news broadcasts. I used to get animated about things that were happening that were beyond my control.
The press went through a short period when they decided they would try to lighten things up, but even bad news is news and has to be reported, and they went back to doom.
Nowdays I listen to the news once a day, and read a tabloid newspaper - not too much earth-shattering news there - and I live in blissful ignorance. Nothing seems to have changed over the last 10 years (apart from having my computer!)
My thoughts are now; My generation has done it's bit. Its up to you now.
But on the whole - yes, the news gets more and more depressing. And no, you are not alone.
Seal your letter box and cut the plug off your TV?

Don't be afraid of the truth. Everything happens for a reason, and yes it is sad,and yes it's normal. The only way I keep on top of things,is during the day, at work, on the internet news this way I can pick what I want to see and disregard the things that upset me.
