well did u steal it if u did give it back without him knowing and say u found it lol and if u didn'tr steel t just be like welll who r the other suspects and we will track em just don't act like an suspect

I play along and say "That's horrible" Then I hide what ever I stole in the trunk of my car until things blow over.

As long as you didn't steal it, there's no right or wrong way to react.
I imagine they're upset though.
Maybe offer to help them look for it.
