We recently installed a dimmer switch. When it' is "on" it makes a buzzzing sound. Is something wrong?

Also ensure you are using incadescent bulbs in your fixture and NOT floeurscents. Floeurscent bulbs require a special dimmer.

Did you connect the ground wire? It is very important to ground all dimmer switches.

Dimmers switches are rated for the wattage of your lamps. They typically come in 600, 1000, 1500, etc. wattages.

To determine your wattage, just add up the wattage of all of the light bulbs on your light that you are trying to dim. For example, if you have a light fixture with 8 - 100 watt light bulbs, you have 800 watts and the 600 watt dimmer is too small.

A simple solution for the above example is to change your light bulbs to 60 watt each or you will need to install a 1000 watt dimmer switch.

If you wired it as the directions showed you, I would say the switch is defective. Don't buy cheap switches, get a good one.

Also you didn't say wether it is on it's own circut, typed of dimmer or how it is wired.
