I am in japan for 90 days and i am an american citizen. I am wanting to study here more and more. I am staying with my family who lives here. If i find a school and would like to go to school here, how may i turn my tourist visa into a student visa?

If you can get an educational institution to sponsor you for your visa, Yes, you can start the process of acquiring your student visa while you are in Japan. The school would need to fill out all the paper work and documentation and submit it to immigration. Then after some time, if the application is accepted, immigration would give the school a "Certificate of Eligibility" for your student visa. The school would give you the certificate. You would then need to leave Japan and go to a Japanese consulate out side of Japan. They would give you your visa, then you could return on your student visa. It is illegal to be on two visas. That is why you need to exit the country once.

The closest Japanese consulate in another country would be Korea. I had the exact same thing happen to me when I was changing my visa status. I had to leave the country once. I went to Pusan, Korea. I submitted all the documentation as early as possible one day, they processed it, I got it back the next morning. You MUST write a letter asking the Japanese consulate to express your visa work if you want them to do it overnight. If you don't submit the letter with your paperwork, it will take a few days.

Good luck.

By the way, the reason why most people think that you can only apply at the embassy in your home country is because in order to apply, there is a lot of paperwork you must submit to the school so they can go to immigration. The paperwork required is usually in the home country. But if you have all your paperwork with you, you can do it in Japan.

Most often, you would need to apply for a student visa at the Japanese embassy in your home country. If you are already in Japan (because you have a parent that is legally working in Japan or is a member of the US military stationed in Japan) and have been accepted into an educational program, you can ask the US embassy there to assist you in gaining a student visa. If they cannot, you must return home to apply for the visa.
