If you live in ohio or penn. then Ohdela or PHdela is free, they give you a computer and pay for internet and they even give you money for sports or educational field trips... look into it... or try ecot or the virtual learning academy. How old are your kids? Im 17 and homeschooled and its ruined alot of things for me... they need to get involved in alot of extra curriculars and you better hope they are self motivated enough to do the work... I procrastinated and now I have to graduate late... it feels like the teachers dont really care and the people that are there to help never really do... but I guess it depends on where you go

Well, you've got some research time, so that's going to help a lot. First off, try hitting the local library and looking for "The Teenage Liberation Handbook." It's essentially a primer for those above the age of 12 who think they're mature enough to take the lead on their own education. (BTW, I would have eaten my own left leg to have had this opportunity at the age of 13. But I was wary of being lectured at the kitchen table by my mother and didn't understand what homeschool might have been, so I continued to exist in the public school arena for the next four years. Can I have a refund?) Even if you don't agree with the book, it has a lot of good practical information and challeges your view of education can or should be, so it's still worth the read. After that, you should have a better understanding of what your options are. As long as you adhere to the education laws in your state (and Ohio is different from Michigan, which is different from Arizona which is different from New York, etc.), you're free to pick from a variety of paths. Some people enroll in "virtual schools," where the student remains a public school student (and the district gets to keep the matching federal funds for said student) and their work is overseen and assigned by a teacher. Other people choose to ditch the public schools altogether (they don't like that, it cuts their budget), and they purchase a "curriculum in a box," or join an umbrella school that provides the lessons and materials. Others make up their own curriculum and piece together what they need from the library or the bookstore or from real life. And still others subscribe to the idea of "unschooling," which holds that life itself is educational and the job of a parent is less to teach than it is to serve as a coach and assist the student with finding the resources they need to learn what they want to. (See the writings of John Holt for more on this philosophy.) There's a lot out there and your decision will have as much to do with your personality and comfort level as any thing else. Good luck! :)

Sorry...it has been too long since I have been in the homeschooling circuit...I do know they offer so much on line these days...when I homeschooled my son...it was from books and the higher math subjects I purchased programs on tapes...I can tell you this...yes they can go to college...their acceptance is based on their sat scores...my son went through highschool starting in 2nd grade as a home schooler...he is now in his 3rd year at a University in a Engineering program....Homeschooling really worked for us...and he wants his kids to be homeschooled...there are so many ways to be involved in homeschooling groups these days...Good luck.
