Men's shirt buttons are on the right because most people are right handed and so it's easier. However women's buttons on the left because they used to have maids dress them and so it was easier for the maids to have them on the left because most people are right handed.

Actually, this has a historical reason. Before the 20th century and invention of the automobile, it was considered polite and appropriate when walking with a lady to be on her side that was closest to the street. This was to "protect" the woman from things like horses, runaway carriages, and mud splatters from the unpaved streets. Women's clothes tended to fasten towards the "inside" as well, and Men's towards the "outside", simply because it was thought that women should be protected from getting dirty if the man could help it. Same silly chivalric ideals as the concept of putting down your coat to let her walk across a mud puddle. (which no one really did, it was impractical to wear out clothes like that.)
