depends on what you clap it against. and if you only touch your palm with your fingers you are just waving backwards.

It sounds like nothing because only one hand can't clap.

To clap means:"to strike (as two flat hard surfaces) together so as to produce a sharp percussive noise"

You need two objects to clap, therefore if only one hand where to try and clap it wouldn't succeed or be considered a clap because the hand would then have to hit something to make it count as a clap.

The hand could clap air, but then it would make the sound that can't be heard by most hearing of something moving through the air and hitting it.

The sound is that of restrained happiness, appreciation. Not all sounds are heard, some sound is inferred. We develop the stimulus response relationship until we know what someone means/feels based on very little interraction. Body language can hence produce the same response that words or in this case sounds do.

How do I know?....Based on past experiences.

Ask me again in a while - I'll have a different answer.

Its a Zen Koan - the 'correct' answer is the spontaneous answer. Its not like a math problem where there is one definite solution.
