I'm in management. I have assigned a job to a coworker where she needs to drive 150 miles (roundtrip) once a week. She is to drive to a landfill and take water measurements. Today, she has said "doesn't think this morning is a good time to drive to the landfill." The weather is foggy and the roads are icy. I sound mean, but in an hour or two the temperature will be above 40, no ice and the fog will be gone. She has flaked out before saying the weather was bad and the roads would be bad and I've driven it. The roads were fine and the weather was just cold. Anyway, tell me I'm silly for being annoyed. She says it's too treacherous for HER to go, so I need to assign it to someone else. UGH, she sucks. And I suck for asking this question, but I'd like opinions.

It sounds like this may not be the job for her. Is there something else in your buisness where she would be better suited, without having to fire her? It sounds as if she gets very stressed out about driving if the weather isn't Clear, Period! Her stress falls back on you and winds up stressing you out, because you need to find someone to do the job or do it yourself. It sounds very clear to me, that she is in the wrong job area. She doesn't suck and niether do you for asking the question. You need a sit down talk with this person. lay it all out on the table. There are needs that have to be met and if the person in that postion can't meet them, they need to think about doing something else.I hope this all works out for you. There are many jobless people that would jump on this job, that aren't afraid of weather driving. Good Luck.

Here's the issue, if SHE feels it is too dangerous to go, she won't go, basically because no job (other than say Hollywood stuntman or soldier) is worth dying for. Can't she drive to the landfill and go home from there? Say, have her leave at 2:30 and bring her work in the next morning or call her measurements in...incentive my friend....

She needs to talk together with her supervisor. If the different guy is being impolite and demeaning to her, that may no longer ideal habit. She needs to maintain her composure and tell the reality. this is a aggressive employer, yet they might desire to temper the competitiveness with kindness.
