Nicknames tend to stem from association from the person to another thing eg when my hair gets longer it starts to curl like a Jewish guy and I get the name "Jew curls" or a person with gingers can have a bad complexion and they could look like salami so people would call them salami, nicknames also stem from the real name of the person eg Michael-Mick-Micka or James-Jim-Jimbo.
