Ideally you should start taking prenatal vitamins as soon as you start trying to become pregnant. Things like folic acid are important even before you know you are pregnant so if you are still in the "trying to conceive" stage you should be taking them.
It is essential to take them the entire time you are pregnant. Even with an excellent diet it is all but impossible to get everything that your baby and you need during your pregnancy.
It is also very important to continue to take your prenatal vitamins while you are nursing your baby. It is true that poorly nourished mothers will actually make nutritious breast milk but they will be short-changing themselves. Prenatal vitamins will make sure that you are not becoming depleted of important vitamins and minerals in order to make good milk.
All in all that means you need to take them for almost two years. Don't take any chances with your health or the health of your precious baby. We are lucky to live in a world where prenatal vitamins are so readily available and so moderately priced. The one young woman that wrote in was quite right, they are available without a prescription and at a very reasonable price!
Good luck and take care of yourself.

I started eating much healthier than before, with lots of fresh fruits and veggies as well. I'm now 25 weeks and "grossly anemic" according to my doctor. On top of my prenatal vitamins, I now have to take iron supplements. Sometimes the healthy foods you think you're consuming isn't enough for 2! I'd play it safe and just take your vitamins, or else you will risk complications for yourself and your baby.
Some women seem to do fine without their vitamins, but since you want the best for your child, why not just take them? It's not that much of a hassle.

Yes, absolutely. Your growing baby needs higher concentrations of certain vitamins (for example, folic acid) than you can get simply through eating a varied diet.

Eating right is very important, but a good prenatal vitamin is equally so.

Prenats! I basically have been given a bottle at wal-mart OneSource 275 pills for like $5, It has a minimum of a hundred% (i think of) in each thing different than calcium, so I chew a antacids (they are in a position for use a calcium source). So entire I spent like $8 for 3 months of supplements. My concept is that i'm basically TTC. that's just to get myself somewhat greater healthy, the child will take what it needs no count what, supplements are just to fill up the mummy. each and each time i'm getting pregnant i'm going to get prescription virimans.

There are vitamins in the prenatals that are hard to get in your regular food. It's worth it to take them just to make extra sure that you're getting enough of all of those. You can go to Target or Walmart & get a bottle of prenatal vitamins for around $5, and it'll last about 4-5 months, so it's not like they're all that expensive.

YES, extremely important!!! The folic acid in the prenatal vitamins to prevent your baby from having spina bifida is just one good reason to take them! Besides, the baby needs the extra stuff in the vitamins, and you'll benefit too, your hair and nails get GREAT while you're taking the prenatal vitamins.

I actually was told by the hospital to go off them for a few days because I was having severe diarrhea problems. When I went to my OB for the follow up, she said I could go off them because I was at 16 weeks & past the point of the vitamins helping in fetal development. They are more for my health now. However, she suggested to stay on them. Because of my stomach issues, I have been put on them every other day, so I still get the health benefits.

Yes, because like someone said you essentially need more than what you already get, cuz the baby needs them too. Also, there may be nutrients in the vitamins that you may not get enough of just by eating even a variety of things.

Check with your doctor but yes, usually they want you to be on them the whole time, so you don't get anemic and the baby gets enough iron and everything else he/she needs. It's good that you're eating a healthy diet too. If you get constipated from the vitamins, try prunes - they're nasty but they worked really well for me.

Good luck and congratulations!
