I always liked getting babies a piggy bank. I have a store near me that personalizes them. I'm sure you can find a store near you too. Another thing I like to buy for baby is their first bible or first rosary (if they are religious - also great for baptism gifts). Pottery Barn Kids has a lot of items you can get that come with personalization... check out their website if your stuck for ideas. Personalizing something always makes the gift appear you put a lot of thought into it.
If you're looking to do something for the parents - make them a dinner. Could be something that is freezable so they can put it away and pull it out when they need it.

Case of diapers !
Johnson and Johnson newborn medicine kit found at most baby stores not a first aid kit that's different this is full of things they might not know they will need best gift I ever got!
meals if you don't cook then do you have a local place that makes good meals that can be frozen or even a gift certificate to a restaurant or take out place.
another neat gift was a newspaper for the day the baby was born. I have one for both my girls.
As for the baby I really hated those stuffed animals, sorry but I did

I'm due with my first child in a few months, so I had to ask my sister about this one. She's had FOUR! She said that you should wait until they get home to get them anything, because it's a major pain to carry everything home from the hospital. When they got home, they had all this stuff waiting, and they were so glad that it was at home and not at the hospital.
With that said -- she siad that the gifts that stood out for them were the fun and unique ones. everything else was a blur. A neighbor sent over a cookie bouquet which they liked.
If your friend has a sense of humor, I suggest something unique and fun. I recently had a baby shower and loved some of the really funny and silly gifts we got. My sister-in-law, Emily, gave us some hysterical stuff off a Cafepress shop at www.cafepress.com/c2gdesigns. They have stuff for dad, mom and baby.
Oh, you should also check out baby.lovetoknow.com. They have some good ideas too like a Daddy Survival Kit and Daddy Changing Apron.

I would wait until they get home. It's such a pain taking gifts home from the hospital. Go visit them at the hospital and in a few days bring some diapers over or a gift card so they can buy the diapers they like. I always prefer something practical to a keepsake that takes up space, but that's just me.

They probably received or bought many essential baby items prior to the baby's birth so, I think an appropriate gift for this time might be something special and sentimental such as a stuffed animal or cozy blanket, you can never have enough of either of those things too!

Get a big bag of diapers and some gift cards to food delivery places. New moms and dads have a hard time with cooking in the first few weeks after they have a baby.

I like to get those things they hang on the door. I can't for the life of me think what they are called right now, but they will put the baby's name on it, birth date, weight, length, little rattles and binkies and stuff like that. They are so cute and a good keepsake. I think the mommy always appreciates flowers. It doesn't have to be anything huge, just a few pretty flowers will work. So often, the mommy kinda gets forgotten about and everyone just brings stuff for baby.

You could get a nice picture frame or photo album. Honestly, its the thought you are going for, you don't want to get another thing for him to load up the car with. Stay away from stuffed animals. He's going to end up with hundreds of them. You could bring a handprint and footprint kit that they can get help from the nurses to do. It's much easier to do it in the hospital with all of those people around. Bring a couple cups of Dunkin doughnuts with you too. Hospital coffee is pretty terrible.

Gift idea site could help but its a girl things are cheesy you are correct. I think maybe some toys or bath stuff for the baby would be nice. Maybe even a bib.

fuzzy baby socks, baby blankets, crib pads are all appreciated and needed, no matter how many they may already have and a pack of baby socks usually doesn't cost any more than a fancy balloon- for your friend you could also get a disposable camera with a flash, that way they can take pics of the new babe or anything else they want to *LOL*
