I had a succesion of Mini Coopers and S's back in the 70's and 80's and raced both 970s and 1275s cars. I recently borrowed a "new" bmw Cooper S and, surprisingly, it brought back very fond memories. My everyday car is a Porsche boxster s and I was tempted (only for a minute) to trade it in. If it were possible to get a good condition ORIGINAL(early 1960's) mini cooper 1275 s, go for it. They are so rare nowadays, and all the good ones fetch ridiculous money, that it will probably only ever be a dream for you, but alot of fun can be had in any mini, so try one out.

I love how the older minis look. They are smaller and look a lot nicer from the outside in that classic car style. I live in Europe and see them occasionally. Of course the older minis do not have a lot of the gadgets today's cars have.
