There are 2 heater elements an upper and lower you can replace both of them. Make sure you go to fuse box and turn off first. If the water heater gets to hot it will blow a hose on top of water heater. you might have to replace it also. Its not hard to do. If you have a sears unit there will be a 1-800 on the heater, you can call them and they will help you throught this process

TWO POSSIBILITIES One of the elements is grounded. This will cause the thermostat to be bypassed. One of the two thermostats is stuck closed. To cover all angles, replace both thermostats and elements. You can check the elements with a volt/ohm meter for a grounded conditon but it will not tell you if the thermostat is stuck closed. Depending on water conditions in your area and age of water heater, replacement might be a better option.

It sounds like one or both rods, inside the tank, are corroded. Either replace the rods or buy a new tank.
Have you drained your tank lately? If not, do so.
Don't keep resetting it, you could cause major damage to the unit.
