The basic format consists of five numerical digits.

An extended ZIP + 4 code includes the five digits of the ZIP code, a hyphen and then four more digits, which allow a piece of mail to be directed to a more precise location than by the ZIP code alone

There's more to America than the U.S.A. Canada is part of America, and its postal codes have six characters (letters and digits alternating) plus a space. Mexico uses five-digit postal codes. Brazil uses five-digit postal codes with an optional three-digit extension. One news item said that Nicaragua was planning to set up a system of eleven-digit postal codes, which is somewhat wasteful: you could give each and every Nicaraguan resident a separate postal code with only seven digits. Argentina uses a letter, four digits, and three more letters. On the other hand, some countries in the Americas don't have postal codes at all.

The + 4 digits are not exactly new, they've been around in a lot of areas for a good 10 years. Much of the mail is now sorted by machine and these extra digits help narron down the delivery point even further. Some zip codes are rather large and served by several post offices and this helps break the mail down to the proper delivery office. It not only saves time, but saves money and makes the mail go through faster.

We have 5 and sometimes 9 on an american postal code. It depends on one's location as to whether or not they get 9. We used to have only 5, grouped by location. Now, with population growing we need an additional 4 to help break delivery problems up.

Hope that explanation helps.

Most US zip codes have five digits, which usually is enough to define a small area of a town or city. The five digit zip code can also have a hyphen and four extra digits in order to poinpoint a specific address.

e.g: 10010 is for the Murray Hill area of New York City. 10010-2009 pinpoints the address as 1120 Broadway, New York City.
