What key did I hit in Outlook Express that allows me to only replace letters and not space them?

After I type a message, I sometimes accidentally hit some key that will only allow me to type over existing letters but not use the space bar to add additional ones. Please help! Thanks

It's the "overwrite" key. Click on the "insert" key and that's how you start overwriting rather than inserting the letters. Click it again and the function is cancelled.
