While "morals" and "ethics often are conflated by most English speakers, there is a shade of difference between the two terms. Some philosophers define "morals" as "the theory of right and wrong" or the "interpretation and implementation of a particular value system." Conversely, "ethics" can be defined as "the branch of philosophy that analyzes the principles underlying morality." Ethics is broader in scope than morals in that it encompasses good and evil or it deals with topics concerning virtue and vice as well as the justification of morality.

Ethics and morals are not the same thing.

Morals are the concepts of what is “good” and what is “bad” and how one should behave given this; they get formed and become a tradition in a certain society for a certain period of time. The moral rules may be very different in different countries or even in the same country in different epochs. Morals are a subjective phenomenon since most of their rules do not follow from objective necessity and advisability. The moral rules are about how to dress, where and how much one can bare the body, what terms of speech are decent and what are not, what one should be ashamed of, what “appropriate” to do and what is not, etc.

Ethical principles are objective. They follow from real necessity and advisability. They are based on one’s understanding of the Path to Perfection, to God. This is what God tries to explain people.

Ethics is the science about the correct attitude of man to:

a) God (in all of His aspects and manifestations),

b) other people, and all incarnate and non-incarnate beings,

c) one’s own life path.

hmmm. i'm sure there is a difference, but i'm finding it hard to put it into words.

i'm asking myself the question 'can something be *moral* but *unethical* (or vice versa)?'. and i think the answer is probably yes.

so for example - a doctor would have an *ethic* of promoting the well-being of his patients, which would include the *morals* of not disclosing information, not prescribing unneccessary drugs because s/he will get perks from the drug company etc etc a different doc could exhibit the same behaviours but with the aim of self-promotion, not patient welfare, having learned that keeping his/her head down is the best way to get on in the profession. so his/her behaviour could be seen as *moral* but not *ethical*...

but they are words that we use interchangeably, and loosely. and we tend to use them with assumptions about what is good and bad, applying the words only to what we have decided is *good*. so when i say the second doc's behaviour is not ethical, should i reallly be saying that s/he is holding a different ethical stance, one that puts self above others?

i think what it boils down to is that morals are about behaviour and ethics are about the thinking, or the stance behind the behaviour.

Morals is a way of living. It consists in not doing what is "bad" or "wrong" as decided by religion, education etc.
Ethics is a set of rules that are accepted by some professionals who then have to respect them (like doctor's professional ethics).
I hope this helps.

Morals: Principles of right and wrong in behavior.
Ethics: The discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation. Ethics are based on one's morals.

Hi...Morals I think is what we live our life believing is right or wrong..and how much we practice and stand by them are how strong they are to us.
Ethics to me is a professional way of governing the way people should be treated as a whole..putting aside moral views and standpoints.
Depending on the person involved..these things can become intertwined very easily and misunderstood as one or the other.
ex.(practicing religion and being loyal to your beliefs(moral)respecting and hiring someone that will not be converted and practicing a religion that is differant and misunderstood(ethical)

I'm not sure there is a difference. However, for some reason, I tend to think of morals as a general personality trait while ethics tend to be related to your profession. That's just my gut feeling on it.

Knowing & Understanding: There's A Difference

A man with eight PhDs - he was proud of his achievement - met a monk. The monk asked him, "Why have you been so foolish in life?" The man said: "But I have eight PhDs!"

"I have understood you; it is foolish to spend the best part of life reading instead of enjoying the birds, stars and the moon", said the monk.

"You may have knowledge but not clarity; you may know a lot and yet understand nothing".

What does one have to understand about life?

You have many centres: Intellectual centre, an emotional centre and a body centre. In each centre, there is a mechanical and magnetic part. The mechanical part acts like a machine while the magnetic part acts with ore awareness.

You have to transform yourself. Your mechanical movements and thinking have to change. Your mechanical emotions like jea- lousy and hatred have to be overcome. You can do this by bringing in more awareness.

Then a complete being will emerge. When you increase awareness, even poison can turn into medicine; and with no awareness, medicine can become poison.

Why are we so mechanical?

A king dreamt that he was a beggar. His guru, in his dreams, told him the truth that he was a king and not a beggar. Now was he to argue with his guru or just wake up?

The question of "why" cannot be answered. When did time begin? You cannot answer such a question. Which came first, egg or hen? There is a logical fallacy in the very question. Realise that we are mechanical. Bring in more awareness and see the life-transformation.

Even inert objects have life. Treat any object with loving awareness and it will guide you mysteriously. Your intuition and purity have to increase to receive this message. When you bathe, lovingly talk to water.

In a relationship, is it not necessary to judge? >>

In a relationship, is it not necessary to judge?

Keep yourself relaxed. Increase your awareness and love. Not to judge should not be a conclusion. Don't make it a demand or compulsion. Let there be a choice. There is a difference between "should' and "choice'.

"Should' creates stress; it limits you to only one option. Choose not to judge. It is not a demand but a wise choice.

The danger of judgment is that you stop seeing the object of judgment and you are more in your judgment.

In life, you have to make judgments, but don't be a victim of your judgments. Suppose a thief enters your house, you have to judge him but then, be open to the possibility that he could change.

Suppose you meet him after 10 years, see if he has changed or not. Do you still judge from the memory that he has been a thief? If you do not have this awareness, you will not see the change in a person even if he has changed.

What should one be really aware of?

Negative emotions poison. Like avoiding poisonous food, avoid negative emotions. Don't identify with them. Don't participate in them. Choose to create a new will, not be driven by negative emotions.

They deplete your energy. They keep you asleep. They are harmful and heavy. They make your life complicated. For example somebody's success should not be your failure. We define our failure by somebody's success.

We feel jealous seeing someone successful. Jealousy is a great poison.

Compete with your potential. Even if you compete with others, enjoy it. See beauty all around. Do not define your success and failure by someone's success and failure.
