Probably because the children with whom they are living observed the manner in which the "old" person treated her own parents years ago. Children usually follow in their parents footsteps.

If it is the "old" person's own home, then make the ungrateful child get out.

And, if the elderly person is being abused, DSS should be called.

It is becoming a sad epidemic that needs to be stopped by our generation!!

It seems like every where you turn, there are stories about "child abuse" and advertisements about how to look for the signs and working together to save our children. We need to take the same approach with the elderly. We all need to make time, no matter how busy our lives get, to stay in touch with the people we love, our neighbors, and our community and make sure everyone gets the quality of life they deserve.

The "Golden Rule" has gotten so tarnished that no one can see it anymore. Let's all work together and polish it up.

I would also like to issue a challenge to everyone who reads this answer to take a few hours out of just one day to visit your local retirement complex or senior center, even if you don't know the residents and become involved. Play music, games or read from you favorite book, anything. I guarantee you will make a difference in someones life!!

This is something that I don't understand either.
I think that we need to treat older people with respect because they have been through alot and they deserve to be treated better.
They have already served their time and for someone to come into their own house and push them around is BS. I think it is sad that it does happen sometimes especially when the person can't stick up for himself/herself.
