I'm going to major in journalism, and would feel much more comfortable with my own laptop. The only problem is I cannot seem to find one(or a good website for that matter) with reasonably priced laptops and with enough power to stand up to the tasks I'll have to perform.
I am NOT going with a dell, gateway, or Sony Vaio.
Any other suggestions?

I graduated with a journalism degree in '05. I did most of my work in the computer labs at school, and when I graduated I got a Dell Inspiron 6000. As a journalism major, you will be doing a lot of research and writing. So, really all you'd need is the Internet and a word processor. These are found on all laptop models.

I'd look to find something that promises good battery life, since you may be away from a power source to charge the laptop.

The person above me suggested an Apple. Which is a good machine, but if you're used to the PC's, the Macs can be hard to operate for a while.

I'm not sure why you want to stray from Dell. You can call them and talk to them about getting the exact specs that you want/need and they will build it for you.

Good luck and enjoy your schooling, I did.

Hey noeheaven,

Excellent question. As a former student of the Perley Isaac Reed School of Journalism at West Virginia University, I sympathize entirely with your dilemma.

One of the best laptops to use in the area of journalism are made by (who else) Apple Computers. Not only are Macs more secure from outside attacks than those carrying Microsoft products, but Apple also creates products designed for publishing and/or journalism, such as Quark Xpress and Adobe PageMaker.

The best way to find good prices on the Internet for an Apple laptop would be to check out Web sites such as PriceWatch.com and eBay. You can almost always find a reasonable price for the best notebooks on both sites.

I hope this answers your question, noeheaven, and I would like to extend good wishes to you as you embark on your quest through college.

i think of you should hunt for portability and battery existence in an suitable pc for observe-taking. Many pupils come to a decision on a Macbook, yet they're distinctly high priced notably for a student who's already splashing out lots for training and residing expenditures. yet another decision could be a netbook, such by means of fact the HP Mini. i bought one to be my 2nd pc as quickly as I had to hold my different HP in for a fix and that i hardly ever touch my previous HP back. it incredibly is compact, gentle to hold, and the battery lasts continuously. One draw back is that it incredibly is have been given no CD/DVDpersistent, yet i did no longer incredibly omit it. wish this helps! :)

Grab a warranteed refurbished unit that is just off of Corporate Lease, for $249 to $549. Includes an OS. There are >500 outlets nationwide, indepentantly owned and operated, This one is only a mile form my home, and I know Pat and Greg, and trust them, http://cheaptronicsdepot.com

Buy a Mac. http://apple.com

I repair Macs and PCs of all makes. I see the name brand refurbs, cheaper than the generics, and they are built better.
