are you kidding? They call it the oldest profession because it has been around since caveman times.

A better quesiton would be, "When did sex within marriage start?", since the idea that only married folk should have sex is far more recent than prostitution. The truly old societies in the past didn't have any social objection to random sex (the ancient Egyptian language has no word for 'virgin'), and in any society in which people are free to enjoy carnal pleasures, those with the most desirable product will often find themselves free to sell it to the highest bidder.

There is evidence that monkeys will actually perform sexual acts in exchange for food, or in Kieth Chen's experiments they actually taught monkeys a primitive understanding of money. An unexpected consequence was that occasionally the monkeys exchanged money for sex. Therefore, it's possible that prostitution predates humans.

Why did you post this question under "women"s studies"?
Prostitution applies to both sexes!
Anyway, they say this is the most ancient profession . Which country?? I suppose, the most ancient too. Greece, Egypt....

Haven't you ever heard it referred to as the world's oldest profession? Very prominent back in the BCE days. In the days of Caeser and such, only prostitutes and politicians wore togas (at least I think it was togas...we discussed it in my history class last week).

As far as I know there is no real 'start date' for prostitution, as it is one of the oldest and most tempting sins.
It most likely began whenever the earliest civilization formed.
