I have a 30 gallon tank with a non integrated filter complatible for 40-60 gallons from walmart. Is this filter going to be fine for now? I plan to get a better one with a protein skimmer.

Yep good to go. One of my 30 gallons has a regular whisper filter (40-60)on it and has had it on there for years. Just never upgraded that one. LOL. Your tank will be fine. You don't need expensive filters and skimmers if you pay attention to your tanks.
You may come to find out later or once you have a backpack filter, you will never use a drop filter again! So much cleaner.

It's okay for now, but you might want to get a slight bigger tank.
