My children called my mother their granny 'NANA' - for me it meant was trying to give the older lady her respect and love by making it sound more like a nickname to address their grandmother expessing their love and affection - BUT in later years and with different cultures I found this phrase beng used very ofter by peope who addressed their Father as "NANA"
