They were all filmed at the same time. This was a huge risk considering they didn't know how the first one would go over or if it would make any money. Lucky for them it did both so that by making the next two at the same time wasn't a waste.

They were filmed back to back, a labour of love which took Peter Jackson nearly 9 years in total, and over 3 years of filming.

They were all filmed at the same time. I think Peter Jackson said it took about a year and a half. Of course they had to go back and re-shoot locations and do green screen.

Primary shooting occured over 18 months. There was some time taken off (for like the Christmas holidays), but it was a relentless schedule.
