Many are telling you "Presidents' Day", but are not telling you WHAT president ! You see, years ago, when I went to school in the U.S.A., we got off school & all businesses closed on the following birthdays in honor & tribute to TWO former presidents we consider the most highly regarded. Our first, George Washington, was called "The Father of Our Country", and was born on Feb.22nd. Next, Abraham Lincoln, known as "Honest Abe", was later born on Feb.12th in a log cabin & grew up to be a great leader & spokesman who wrote the Emancipation Proclamation which freed the slaves. Now present-day businesses & schools decided to merge the 2 together to lessen days off, and so Presidents' Day was created. Strangly enough, though, many department & chain stores are open to take advantage of the workers' being free from their jobs and put on special "Presidents' Day Sales". That's some American History for you; I notice you are in a foreign country!

It was actually Washington's Birthday. There's officially no such thing as "President's Day."

In 1968 Congress combined the Lincoln's birthday (Feb 12) and Washington's birthday (Feb 22) holiday weekends into a single holliday weekend. Though nearly everyone refers to this new holiday as "President's Day weekend" they are wrong. Congress never created that combined holiday, so there is no official U.S. federal holiday known as "President's Day." It was and still is officially Washington's birthday.
