Yes and no, it can be good at highlighting certain issues such as domestic violence, child neglect etc, but on the other hand it seems to cater more and more these days for dumb asses, even the news has been dumbed down especially ITV news, focusing on so called entertainment/celebrity news rather than more important topics/issues that are happening around the world. The media can be very misleading and tries to often brainwash people into thinking a particular way, it doesn't always give views from all angles and often important factors are missed out, frequently not showing an argument from all sides, its regularly rushed. And these so called singing talent shows such as The X FACTOR try to convince people that what they see IS talent when really its just aload of old rot, the same old same old, and a way of making mugs hand over their hard earned cash, when its just millionaires such as Simon Cowell making more money to add to their greed, its sad but its a fact that todays society has changed for the worse and ONE main factor is television but also other media such as magazines/newspapers, music etc have contributed to this sorry state of affairs!

I'm all for anything that gets information out there, but TV is so different than it used to be. Sometimes, I see shows from the 70's, and I think what a different world that was. The women weren't all surgically altered, the men weren't all drop-dead gorgeous...the characters portrayed on television were so much more true to life. Now an impossible standard of physical beauty has been set, and it's depressing for young people who want to be that beautiful but don't understand how much artifice goes into getting those people to look like that.

Kids used to read more, and write better because of it. They didn't get all their entertainment from television, they had to use their imaginations, and both literacy and imagination are lacking these days because of it.

All in all, I think it has changed too much, and it isn't that good for us.

I think there's just too much information in this world now. TV, Radio, Email, SMS, Mobile Phones, Internet, etc. Oops, I wouldn't be replying to this if it wasn't for the Internet. Can't cope ..........must self destruct ..............

Eamonn de Valera's speech on RTE's opening night still rings true:

'Like atomic energy, it can be used for incalculable good, but it can also do irreparable harm.'

I think that t.v. can be educational, but mostly it's brain draining, mind numbing evil.
