It is not that I do not think that they are intelligent people. It is just that I have lost respect for academia in general. At least, in my field. It just seems to be a self-perpetuating academy that cranks out "research" papers, many pointless, usually hashing over the same things that have been hashed over in the past.

I need to finish this degree but my Professors can tell I have this attitude -one told me directly yesterday that she knew that I think the whole thing is a joke.

(I am asking this here because its related to academics)

Look at this realization as a learning experience.

Things are no different out in the real world. I can't tell you how many times I have had to complete a project that was obviously a waste of time, or that had been done before with poor results.

Just as you are doing now, you must weigh the pros and cons of letting others see how you feel about what you have been asked to do.

My best advice is to learn to smile and appear upbeat about "EVERYTHING" you are asked to do or find something else the you truly have a passion for and enjoy doing.

I see it all the time in the news, so called "discoveries" that are 20 years old and repeated every 3 months or so.
What the hell?
And "amazing" or "ironic" facts that are no surprise what so damned ever. (Like you know, sleep more, be healthier-- What RETARDED *** got a grants for that one)

I feel the same, but I don't have a lack of respect for the professors, rather the culture that is promoting this stagnation and redundancy, and lack of vision or nuance.
My answer is basically to go overseas, to a country of my choice, to learn by example how research is really done, and what skill and insight really are.
Yeah it isnt practical but I'v wanted to go there since I first visited 13 years ago ;) It'll be my true life's dream realized if I can make it there amongst the peers.

I just try to understand that this culture just doesnt have a seriousness about academics; they dont have a love for it or a drive for it. ----> They use it to their own or some skewed advantage, not for the furthering of the field. <----
That explains a lot.

*And I like Lunatics answer. I just take it in stride, and put myself where I am more comfortable.

What has happened to etiquitte? Does it not exist anymore? President Kennedy once said that his key to appearing successful was to practice "grace under pressure". Obviously these professors know something more than you do, so you can learn something from them, no matter how disillusioned you may feel. You should have respect for them and the academy, and if it has gotten to such a low point where you are not mature enough to behave properly and conceal it - then maybe you should leave.

Beat them at their own game. Using their own words, methods and facts prove it is just a game in writing.
