Venice starts to warm up in May but the weather can still be unpredictable especially at the beginning of May. I suggest you take a mix of clothing. Go mainly for things you would wear in warm weather but take something that will keep you warm in the evenings in case it gets chilly.

I have been many times and the advice from wflspc, livewire, craigg, and billyb8 is spot on. Good shoes and layers is the key. Caroline is wrong about the bartering. There is no way you will be able to exchange anything other than cash for a ride on a gondola. With regard to pickpocketing, it is not "rife" but you must take precautions as you would in any crowded place, and believe me it can be positively heaving with tourists.

The bug repellent is only needed from April to Sept. The nights always seem cooler as the water keeps the temp down. So something to keep the chill off.
In the daytime the same happens in that in feels cooler than it should, the sea breeze from the lagoon. You can get badly burned very quickly.
Also the large number of churches to visit means conservative dress is encouraged.
Smart dress can also help in the better restaurants.

Casual comfortable clothes. Bring a sweater and very comfortable shoes. They say if you want to see Venice try to get lost so I know you will be walking a lot.The May temperature is about 70 degrees.

Well apart from the vaporetti (water buses) it's all cobbled and hard streets so comfortable shoes and warm clothes if you are going very soon. Otherwise Venice is a beautiful place and you'll be so enthralled clothes are secondary.

Anything casual by Day, You'll be spotted as a tourist no matter what you wear. Please watch your handbag or wallet, pickpocketing is rife. Distribute your money in various places round your clothing, Always be aware If you dine or drink around St Peters Square it will cost a mint. Don't forget the camera.Wear stout waterproof footwear areas likely to flood ankle deep. have a good time and enjoy.

Smart casual with layers and comfortable shoes if you're going to be walking around. Make sure you've got your camera. Although possibly a bit tacky you've got to go in a gondola too - barter over the price too as many will drop their price!
