Since living in Germany as I do now I have used Calgon to help the machine and I never believed it was necessary either but I actually have a neighbour here whose machine failed from a build up and not using the Calgon tablets in her machine! So I would say that yes they do live longer when you use calgon. :-)

London and the south east are the worst for hard water. I have started buying a water softener as it wasn't limescale that made my last washing machine die but the hard water makes your clothes/towels etc go really hard and it does damage any surface. I now put a scoop of water softener in each wash - I hope it helps the machine but it definately makes your clothes soft and stops towels from going like boards! There are cheaper alternatives to Calgon, which are exactly the same.

It depends on your water hardness but from experience, I live in a very hard water area and we've never used any softening and our last machine went on for twelve years. Machines usually die from motor or timer failure rather than heater or being clogged with scale. I suppose if you do use a softener it can only help.

I don't think it makes much difference. unless you live in an area with serious calcium problems.
