I routinely surf a lot of multi-national forums and I keep running into the same conundrum. There'll be a Brit (or an Aussie, or a Frenchmen, or a Canadian... but 90% of the time, it's a Brit) who'll go on and on incessantly about how much s/he hates Americans and then rant about how we have this obsession with guns and shooting ourselves. If they hate Americans so much, wouldn't it make said Brit happier that we're killing ourselves?

Generally you will find that most of the Brits that don't like Americans have never been to the US. They base their prejudices on ignorance. This could also be exasperated by a "particular type" of American tourist that can be encountered in Europe.

Others fail to express themselves clearly that it is the policies of the US goverment that they dislike.

As for guns I agree slightly with the people you aren't happy with. I have met quite a few Americans obsessed by guns. I know I shouldn't generalise but I suppose it's human nature.

These Brit's wouldn't be particulary happy because you are "killing" yourselves - they would much prefer you to do something stupid (shooting each other probably comes under this) - In this way the "Yank" stereotype is reinforced and there is nothing more than stupid people like than to reinforce their picture of the world.

NB. I use the word Yank purposefully as a deragratory term
This type of anti-americanism usually claims americans are a bit stupid and it is funny how it is used mostly by stupid people.
You obviously have similar cognative abilities to the rest of the world, you have made great technological advances - just sometimes you come over as a bit innsular.

Oh by the way - I'm British.

at first, there is not any such concern through fact the government doing something life like or limited. earnings tax started at a million% and replaced into utilized to three million% of the inhabitants. Now this is ~30% on one hundred% of the inhabitants. Medicaid value 10s of tens of millions whilst started, now value 10s of Billions. no longer something the government starts off as small and limited keeps to be that way. in case you place any restrict on weapons, it is going to ultimately be a entire ban, this is in simple terms a count of time. 2d, a gun is a gadget. in simple terms an trouble-free inanimate merchandise this is neither reliable or evil. it might make as a lot sense to place limits on the kind of hammers or automobiles that a guy or woman can very own. Who desires one hundred automobiles? yet some human beings very own that many. And automobiles kill tens of thousands extra human beings in line with annum than weapons. human beings have been murdering one yet another for each and all of the ~10,000 years of recorded human history, long previously weapons have been invented. Ban undesirable human beings, no longer inanimate products. Why ought to 80 million gun proprietors loose their rights and their freedom to possess a gun in simple terms through fact a million nut pastime abuses it? Punish the a million nut pastime, no longer the 80 million favourite human beings. it fairly is meant to be the "land of the unfastened". So depart my freedom to possess a gun on my own. the two you have faith in freedom, or you do no longer. for sure you do no longer.

Well actually, were not all killing ourselves. Gangs are killing themselves regularily, but that is the result of govt policies that are replacing the family with the gang.
As for our penchant for firearms, they are part of the American way. We have used them to conquer most of a continent, as well as to overthrow a once tyrannical British monarchy. We Americans for the most part, understand that guns are a valuable tool against crime (areas with right to carry laws have lower crime) as well as a constitutional insurance against tyranny by our own government, heaven forbid. Our founding fathers insisted that we have the right to keep and bear arms to keep our consitution from being eroded by the same type of people who we fought during the revolutionary war. It may burn some Brit's a bit that we were able to do so, hence their disdain for our respect for firearms.
Our British friends may wish they had more firearms if the Islamic populace of their country decides to act as they did in France by burning cars and killing nuns. Then they may begin to understand, just maybe.

It's just that the Brits like to feel superior. Trouble is, they don't have anything to feel superior about.

In reality, they want the guns themselves but can't have them. It's simple envy.
