People say that it is positive thinking to say that the glass if half full. To me it's only positive if you are filling the glass - but what if you are emptying the glass?

and for your second question - it was the person on the left

If I am filling it up it is half full. If I am in the process of emptying it it is half empty. And at least I left some for you. I try not to be greedy. Isn't that thoughtful?

An Optimist would say it was half full
A Pessimist would say it was half empty
An Engineer would say the glass was twice as big as it needed to be.

(and apparently, someone good with estimation drunk the half, since tapered glasses are hard to divide half from :D )

Now that we know the significance ,no matter if it was being filled or emptied,we want to sound right,so now we all say ,yes it is half full, keeps you on the right side of the fence.

If the glass started out full and someone drank half, then it's half empty.

If the glass was only poured to the halfway mark, then it's half full.
