i am currently in my final year at uni on a media arts degree and yet, i have studied this before when i did an access to media course a few years ago and studied genre and narrative, so yes. codes are the different structures of meaning. for us to know how codes work, we have to analyse and examine sign systems and the rules which they all have. signs come in different forms, indexical, symbolic, iconic to name. a code is basically the sign in semotics terms, which is made up of both the signifier (the image, visual aspect of the object, animal etc) and signifier (the meaning, word itself or the literal interpretation of the object, animal, etc). the signifer and signified has to co-exist with one another, in order for meaning to make sense to us. otherwise, it would be meaningless. conventions are mainly rules that govern a genre or of which makes it identifiable to us. for example, in a horror film, the conventions are victim/s, killer/murderer, blood and gore, killings for eg. codes and conventions are very much part of semiotics, which analyses language and how various signs convey social and cultural meanings. hope this helps. if not, then feel free to email me and i would be happy to assist you
