Pros:
Helps improve responsibility
Improves communication skills
Gives you your own money and helps you to appreciate the value of money
Good for socialising with others
Useful to get some understanding of work before you decide on future career path
Cons:
May take up too much time and you may get behind with school work
Make you more tired
Less time to spend with family & friends
On a personal note, I got a job at 15 as a waitress. It really helped me to overcome my shyness and I loved having my own money. I would always advise a teenager to have a part-time job.

Despite I am no longer a teenager and not yet a parent, I had a job while I was a teenager (about 10 years ago). I can try to answer based on my experience of working PT in a candy store while attending high school.
I believe that it depends on the child, his/her academic position and circumstances.
I was in all Honors/AP classes in high school, involved in band/orchestra and volleyball. I wasn't very involved other than this. Also, the job wasn't stressing and I had good people around me.
Pros
Financial responsibility
Accountability
Time Management
Sense of pride
Cons
Can limit what your child can be invovled in.
If in a deadbeat position - can have a negative influence on your child

I've never worked as a part time job or anything but for me, Target/K-Mart seems too tiring. A bookstore might be too boring, but maybe the most relaxing. The Pet Store place seems like the most fun especially because I love animals. Working in Toys R Us looks like a looot of fun but I always get lost there. Lol I agree with the person above me, take some time and think of which one of those jobs would you enjoy the most =] Good Luck..

They get to make their own spending money, and they can save toward their college degree, they get to interact with the real working world. The downside is that they spend less time on their lessons, and might even decide not to go on to college, when they start earning on their own.
