The apes we have today and humans BOTH evolved from common ancestors.
Some creationists have this silly idea that todays apes are the same apes of the past, so that if we evolved from them they would have to die out. It's wrong on so very many levels.

Well, there are two theories to your question.
Darwin's theory was that we evolved from apes, but Creationists believe that we were made by a higher power. Here is a link that will explain it in further detail.

yes, we did. abt 6 million yrs ago, humans' ancestors formed. we are most like chimpanzees and bonobos as 98-99% of our dna are the exact same. then gorillas. we have similar aspects of these priamtes in our minds. e.g. we have complex thought and emotion, these primates harbor hte same aspects.
first there were homo erectus, then homo erectus erectus, then teh nenderthals. then humans formed.
if u look at female chimps, they have boobs. i never knew they had boobs. human females have boobs.
likewise, they have a great amount of sexual tension and energy within them and they exercise a great deal of polygamy. e.g bonobos do the polgamy more than chimps. bonbos have a lot of food around so they don't fight for food, so they are more female dominant b/c all hte males sleep with all hte women so they don't know whose their child or not, so there's no infanticide. they are like mormons
chimps don't have that much food, so the males compete for food, the strongest male is always the fullest male. so they end up competeing for rights with women chimps. some killl babies to prove a point to an extent. so they're more violent. and like humans that are not mormans. they are like the average human in america that has rage and jealousy in them when their spouse cheats.

We evolved from hominids, who evolved from apes, who evolved from monkeys, who evolved from pro-simians, who evolved from arboreal mammals, who evolved from early placental mammals, who evolved from monotremes, who evolved from mammal like reptiles, who evolved from synapsid reptiles, who evolved from earlier reptiles, who evolved from big d_mn amphibians, who evolved from lobe fined fish, who evolved from bony fish, who evolved from cartilaginous fish, who evolved from jaw-less fishes who evolved from chordates, who evolved from sponges (via neotany), who evolved from single celled organisms.
You could add another roughly three and a half billion years worth of evolution describing (speculating in some cases) the fine differences between different types of single celled organisms and when they are though to have arose, but I've already pushed too far beyond the bounds of your question.
