My kids are 14 and I set the bedtime at 9:00 because I know they usually take another 1/2 to actually get in bed with lights out. They have to get up at 5:45 in the morning to catch bus for 6:30 and they have a long school day. I am not strict strict about it but I know when they stay up later they are tired in the morning. NO they can't stay up until 5:00 am on the computer.

No..5 am is out of the question. The parent needs to use their parenting and put down some rules. Take the plug out of the wall on the computer at 10pm and that's all there is to it. If there are video games, take them also. 10pm is a decent time for the teen to get some good rest so their performance throughout the day in school is not at risk.

I enforce my child to be in bed no later than 9 p.m...she is however, 10 years old. When she is a teen, I would enforce her to be in bed no later than 11 p.m. But NEVER in a million would I allow her to be on the comp until 5 a.m. That is just irresponsible parenting.

10 pm is late enough on a school night. 5 am is too long even on weekends. Is the computer in you teens room? Put time restrictions on the computer. I went through this with my son. I was called mean mama for a long time after that.

That depends partly on what time they have to get up.
Schedule for a minimum of 7 hours of sleep. 8 preferred.
No, 5AM is just wrong. If the teen disagrees... take the computer power cord. If that doesn't work, take the computer. If that doesn't work, take away something else TOO.
Eventually the teen will learn that its a bad idea to show disrespect... when he/she has no car access, no games, no TV, no computer... essentially no life except schoolwork and chores around the house.

Let him try, he'll soon learn when it is best for him. I've tried staying up until 2 and then waking up at 7, so I lowered the time to 12 and that was pushing it. Now I go to bed at 10 which leaves me about 9 hours of sleep. Just let him experiment:)

Can your teen function after staying up so late? Sleep is important for teens, but it is also important for them to figure out how much sleep they need on their own. How are his grades? Athletics?
I'm almost fourteen and I haven't had a bedtime since second grade. I go to bed when I'm tired, which is normally around midnight. I wake up every morning at seven a.m. for school, and I'm perfectly fine. My parents have always had the rule in place, 'If you can wake up without being grouchy, and can maintain your grades, then you can stay up as late as you want'. I have straight A's, and I never wake up moody...most of the time lol.

no way if your sons staying up till 5 that most likely means hes sleeping in school and if hes always sleeping in school then eventually its gonna come back like your a bad parent for letting him do it i think you should tell him he has to be in bed by 10:30 and let him watch tv or someting as long as its off by 11 11:30 he should still be able to get a good nights sleep and be able to function at school and still fell like he has a little bit of late night time

Teens do need a little independence. For my own teens [I don't have any yet] I will probably end up having "quite time" at ten. This is just to get everyone in their rooms and eventually they will fall asleep. I also don't plan on having computers in my children's rooms [unless they purchase one themselves] so I don't think it's going to be that big of a deal.
No, I wouldn't allow him to stay up until 5AM ever. Goodness only knows what he may be getting up to online.

No I wouldn't let them stay up till 5 am. But if you want to know when they should go to bed, it depends on when they get up. if they get up at 6:30 there bed time should be around 9:00 any earlier, no later.
