How about a millage allowance per car per year anything over the allowance, you pay say 5p -25p a mile based on the size of your car engine
might sound a bit mad to some but it might stop people making short journeys when they can walk.
might allow more people to car share.
also how about getting rid of bus lanes where about 3 buses an hour use them?

The best alternative to road charging would be an improved public transport system. Motorists are all ready taxed for every thing that they do. Fuel duty is amongst the highest in the world, car tax increases on a yearly basis and we pay VAT on car purchases. Road charging or mileage allowances would force the motorist to pay for something that they have already paid for in car tax. If people had a reliable and flexible alternative they would use it. Getting rid of bus lanes is not the answer, getting more than three buses an hour using them is. Better integration between trains and buses and cheaper/better parking at bus and train stations would encourage people to drive only to there and not their final destination. I use my car every day as there is for me no viable alternative to get to work on time. I would rather let someone else take the strain and read the paper on the way to work as would most people I know!

Whats wrong with getting rid of road tax and putting it on fuel. It would make those who dodge the car tax pay at last and there wouldnt be the big brother government proposals that everyone is up in arms about

it might work but then you need to take into account of businesses who drive everywhere in the country. what about the truckers? we go see our parents and they live 400miles away so what do we do? not go and see them? There is some much air tax to pay. we pay car tax, so we can drive our car on the road, we pay council tax to help with the roads in our town and then we also pay taxes so how many do you think we should pay to help the government out?
They are trying to run our lives at the min and tell us what we can and cant do i.e smoking and where to smoke, not that i do smoke but i feel for them standing outside. we would not like it if they said not more alcohol served after 8pm or we could not have pub game machines and things like that.
my point is its never going to make any one happy having to pay so much tax.

Fuel is already extortionately taxed - so people who travel more miles (or have gas guzzlers) pay more than the rest of us.

Talk of road tolls and congestion charging is a typical government ploy to make us grateful when they don't introduce it and hit us with some other form of stealth tax instead !

I think a better alternative would be to put the money on fuel. Everyone needs fuel so everyone should pay. I would rather pay extra money on petrol or diesel than pay to use a road. BLOODY LABOUR government, get them out ASAP.

I think it is better to tax the fuel. This allows people who must drive long distances to choose more economical vehicles.
