My work friend has just had her tyre changed in the car park at work by one of those comapnies that come out when you call them. In the process the threading of one of the holds has been wiped out and one of the bolts has fallen off. This now means the whole wheel will have to be replaced. The garage are saying the damage could have been done by the last person who serviced the car. Who is libel, my friend now has a big repair bill!

This is called fair wear and tear and your friend needs to stump up. Its not a wheel you need its a hub and it wont be that expensive. Sorry but you can not blame a garage or a tyre fitter for this. Was it Peugoet 306 buy any chance cause my niece had exactly the same problem and this is the only time in 25 years i have come across it?

Not the wheel, wheels don't have thread. The thread is either on stubs fixed to the hub and nuts that hold the wheel on to them, or on bolts that pass through the wheel from the outside and engage with threaded holes in the hub. The wheel is just clamped between. If your friend is being charged for a new wheel, that suggests the wheel suffered some other damage. Wheel bolts and nuts are toughened steel and designed to take a large torque, I would be surprised if anyone changing a wheel was able to do the damage you describe. Bottom line is, nothing can be proved, noone is going to take the blame.

Go to a Motor Factor and see if you can buy thread inserts. I have used these when the threads went on a cylinder head and they work as good as the original ones. Tell the Motor Factor what you need it for because if he doesn't have it , he can tell you where to get one. They have a left hand thread when you fit them in.

If your friend can't prove that the bolt wasn't stripped before the repairman touched it she's out of luck, unless the repairman admits it. I doubt that will ever happen! I would just pay the bill and not call them for anymore repair jobs.
