It would be eaiser to tell you the breeds that are NOT good with children and also have a role as a guard dog. Most breeds will suit your needs.
Most of the answers you have received are good ones - other than the St Bernard. St Bernards are a loyal dog and wonderful with children and families - but are not even remotely suited as guard dogs - they love everyone.
Also, if anyone should suggest a Beagle - that is wrong. Beagles love everyone and while they might be quick to alert you to someone being in the area or approaching - they are not suitable guard dogs and cannot be trained to be aggressive. They also love everyone.
My personal favorite for both roles is the all-American mutt. You can't go wrong with a mutt.

A German Shepherd pup, they'll get use to kids and be good friends and they will also guard them with their lives. They are the best breed of dog around

A Boxer - this is one of the top ten breeds reccomended for kids (playful, tolerant, loves games & snuggling) that also has a common-sense level of guard dog personality (not aggresive, just watchful & will bark about danger). Looks alone will deter most 'bad guys".

Guard Dog? With kids? Not a good idea.
Instead, I suggest you get a Watch Dog. Breeds who make good Watch Dogs are usually great with children.

it depends on the dog and how you bring it up to be around children. If you treat a dog with kindness it will return the favour with loyalty
