I love that poem.

"And the silken sad uncertain rustling of each purple curtain
Thrilled me- filled me with fantastic terrors never felt before;
So that now, to still the beating of my heart, I stood repeating,
"'Tis some visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door-
Some late visitor entreating entrance at my chamber door;-
This it is, and nothing more."

He's alone, freaked out by the strange tapping noises outside, and now his imagination has run away with him to the point that even the curtains are scary.

Sounds like it's pertaining to death.

Death is the inevitable, sad and unknown aspect of life. The purple curtain is 'death' that closes life.

The thrill of death that we fear.
