So I'm thinking about getting this appartment downtown and its is great. Love the floor plan, the finishes, the price. One thing bother me though. The wall that my bed would be up against is the common wall between me and the appartment next to me. Now, this normally wouldn't bother me, but the room on the other side of my bed's wall is the bathroom, and to make matters worse its the wall that the other person's toliet is on. So here's my concern, I am afraid that I will be spending all this money a month for a great place, but evey time my neighbor goes to the bathroom, I will not only hear the flushing, but him or her peeing. yuck. I can't really put the bed anywhere else becasue its a loft and this is the little "nook" part of the space where the bed goes. I have never been in an appartment before, always rented a home. What do you guys think, am I being paranoid? Just seems like being that close to another person's toilet is gross.
Thanks

one more thing, is it possible to "get" anything that close to another person's bathroom? I understand theres a wall, but it just seems so creepy.
Thanks again

This is one of the joys of apartment living. Sometimes your common wall(s) would be someone's bedroom so you would hear them having sex. If the apartment is built well the walls should be thick enough that you won't hear much from next door. Maybe you'll hear the water going through the pipes but not necessarily the toilet flushing. One of the apartments I share a common wall with, our bathrooms are on opposite sides of the wall. If they are in their bathroom at the same time as me I can hear them talking, but I can't understand the words. If it turns out you can hear more than you care to, you could always hang something from the wall to help absorb/block the sound - a piece of carpet or a thick piece of foam. But I imagine it's not that big of a deal and you won't even notice it in the long run.

As for getting something. I would say the chances are somewhere between remote and impossible. I mean think about your own bathroom? Is there disgusting germ infected stuff floating around? No, the disgusting stuff goes down the toilet and through the pipes. Maybe if there was a busted/leaky pipe something could theoretically leak through to the floor of you apartment, but I really doubt you would have anything to worry about.

This feeling is natural and sound whether associated with water or other is disturbing.I think bedroom is a private zone and should not have a common wall with neighbor's toilet.Let it go

Tell your neighbor your situation and advise them to turn on the radio when they use bathroom. You can also record their sessions and then play them back if you find later that you missed the sound
