The cardinal wanted to take over the country. Also he was manipulating the King with giving him bad advice.

from what i know from the 1993 movie, the king is fighting england, and in order to be king, the cardinal makes an alliance with the british to take out the king, and the musketeers stop the cardinal and save the king.
