I would imagine the military Chiefs of Staff advised Blair that troops could be brought home now, and Blair has decided to make a big thing out of it because it is good news from Iraq for once. Can we blame Blair for doing something for votes? He is, after all, a politician and the only way they keep their jobs is by votes, votes and more votes!
I don't think we will go to war with Iran. Blair won't start a war in his last few months of office as that will definitely affect his legacy.

Thought news said they'd be brought home by May 2008. Anything can happen between no and then. For Blair it will be somebody else's problem. Not sure how many troops who've been to Iraq would still vote for Labour now. Too late for the families who've not got anyone coming home. Blair is a disgrace and I wouldn't be surprised if the went straight off to Iran. Medard Le Metec(previous answer) is right - he (Blair) does know what he is doing and that's what makes it so wrong.

Not all troops will be coming home this year and the time frame for withdrawal will always depend on the situation on the ground! Evidently Iran has been behind the roadside bombings of many coalition troops. Allowing our troops to patrol in land- rovers and without adequate body armour has made the government look like a bunch of morons, regardless of the reasons for going into Iraq in the first place.
America will have the latest military hardware and technology to hit the insurgents hard, they are not stupid unlike some of the less informed people who have commented on this subject. Do you think the Americans will idly sit by when IED's from Iran murder their troops? If so, you are living in a delusional world of your own where nothing makes sense to you, armchair observers, prattling about things you obviously know nothing about. This may be typical of certain groups of pseudo goth youth, who don't know whether to get a job, or a life and make comments about George W Bush because it seems to be the in thing to do, rather akin to hoodies at college for example who prefer to spit endlessly instead of allowing their dribble to go down their throats like most normal concienscious people. The arab nations have wanted a nuclear capability for the sole reason of obliterating Israel from the face of the earth, Iran being the loudest exponent of this notion, you live by the sword you die by the sword. America will strike Iran hard for it's continuing support for jihad against the West, it's not a question of how, but when and the arab states are in a state of panic because the gloves are off, the gauntlet has been thrown down, British troops will be replaced by a Country that has the will to destroy those who bomb and murder innocents and peacekeepers. God Bless America.

With the local elections coming up in May ,why else other than gaining votes would T.B. announce he intends to bring troops home. If America let -alone Britain were to attack Iran ,It is very likely that this action would be the start of WW3. Heaven forbid that we don't go down this route. I personally think this would make the war in Iraq &Afghanistan look like a teddy-bears -picnic in comparison..

If there will ever be war with Iran it will be before 2009 (while Iran has no nukes) & it will consist only of overnight bombing raids.
The reason this may happen can fairly be described as a simple case of multinational megacompany ruled capitalist societies (not that there is anything wrong with them) crushing all else. The side effect is that the US & UK will probably be bombed like the IRA used to do by a number of Iranians posing as Pakistanis with forged EU passports.

The answer is no. People do not vote on one issue. There are more important things at home and that is what matters to the electorate. Labour got re elected because they improved the economy and as long as the economy is going well Labour will win another election.

He didn't say how long they were coming home for, perhaps they are coming home on leave whilst new troops are sent in their place, or as experienced soldiers they will be one of the first to be sent to Iran when Bush and B Liar invade.
Blair is a proven liar, how can anyone with a mind of their own believe a word he says.
Listen to what he says, believe the complete opposit and you won't be far from the truth.

I think Tony Blair is bringing them home so that he can leave office believing he's seen the Iraq debacle through. I do not believe any British government would dare back the US Administration in a war with Iran.

my hubby is a British soldier and he says don't believe that they are withdrawing until you see it as in the army things can change at the last minute. Most of the British soldiers don't think much of Blair as they feel they have been screwed over by him. Lack of body armour, poor housing etc you most probably see it in the news as for Iran it would not be a shock if he made plans for this as my hubby and his mates in work think that he would do anything for his own gains but he is far too clever to look bad before the elections.
