I was in the grocery store and looked at this guy from across the store. He was kind of far away, but I could tell he looked at me as well, so I decided to head to the front with my milk by passing him. As I neared closer to him petrified, he took off his shirt or jacket. I'm not sure what it was. He had a T-shirt on underneath his sweat shirt or whatever it was but he took it off as I came pretty close. As I past by, I looked right in his direction. I guess he noticed because he looked up said, 'sup, man?' I said 'sup' back. He said 'how's it going' as I was walking with a big smile. I gave him a bright smile back too and said 'pretty good' straining my head backward because I still wanted to see him, but not look awkward and stop because I was just passing by. He was so cute. I looked forward through this thing that gave off his reflection in a window, but he wasn't looking at me. Was this guy just being a friendly employee. Was he signalling he was str8 by saying 'man', 'dude'?

Sounds to me like he liked you. I'm gay but still use words like man, dude, mate etc. I guess some str8 guys may think they're signaling you, but it's not common. Judging by the eye contact and him taking off his sweat shirt he was into you. Go back to the store and try to find him - take a chance

I think you're probably reading too much into this. Gay or straight, the guy sounds like he was just being nice. Using "man" or "dude" in casual conversation says nothing at all about one's sexuality, and just because a guy took off his vest/jacket/etc. and smiled while you were walking by does not mean that he is gay. (Now, if he FLEXED and looked at you with a big, cheesy grin on his face after doing this, that might be a different story!)

We all wish it were easier to pick up on clues when we're out there in public, but there's just no single Guide to Behavior that everyone is consulting before engaging in social interaction.

Unfortunately, things are just not that simple. As a gay man, if you spontaneously decided to say "man" or "dude" to someone, you would probably not be doing that as a way of signaling anything in particular about your sexuality.

But there's never any harm in making a new friend.

I never considered man or dude. To be straight words. Usually it is quite obvious when someone is gay or straight. Ask him about some celebrity girls he likes. Thats a sure fire way to find out.
Hopefully now crancrab we can lay this feud to rest.
This is all very strange

I don't think "man" or "dude" signifies or ever will signify anything pertaining to whether he's gay or not.

I use the word "dude", not to signal any thing, but just because I like it.

What ought to immediately adult men say? "guy knockers"? Nipples are nipples, i imagine he used the appropriate terminology. unlucky for you in case you wanted him to be gay. i'd search for different clues and enable this scenario slide.
