there needs to be a permanent incentive programme linked to the gym - like supermarket loyalty points. My medical insurance allows me to collect points, by going to the gym, walking 10000 steps and having fitness tests. If I collect enough points I get significant reductions on my medical insurance next year. it's a very good motivator

What about the men? British men are only 1% behind British women in terms of obesity figures. Or does that not count becuase, to quote Family Guy's Peter Griffin "Men can't be fat, only fat women can be fat". Perhaps on the topic of encouraging women to do more excercise, not calling women "lazy pigs", Brian, would make them feel more comfortable about visiting the gym in the first place and give them the self-esteem to care about their health.

The food industry itself is the main contributor to the current rise of obesity level in the West - both genders are at risk healthwise. And it is not going to decrease any time soon.

If you look closely at the food items you buy to consume, the quick meals and fast food, the pop sodas cokes and candy bars versus... the amount of food items you buy fresh from the wet markets and cook on a DAILY basis, you would find your contributory cause of obesity.

In less developed Asia, we rarely buy foodstuffs (canned, bottled or otherwise) from Western-style supermarts; a huge majority prefer to frequent the wet markets for fresh produce... everyday. The obesity level is much lower generally. Also any dairy products are not part of our culture.

I feel it is more practical to be aware of the food and drink intake (fresh rather than processed); to practise responsible eating habit rather than exercise - the one physical activity that people find it hardest to include regularly as part of their daily lives.
