Many of them go because of their poor/bad education quality provided at their home countries.
Some go to even better education (not necessarily bad education at home).
Many students go for a different language, culture, etc. That way they get hands-on experience from other countries, see other places, meet different people and MISS THEIR HOMES, which is very important for appreciating the values of their countries.
There is also a number of those going for adventure during studies. Beer, as already mentioned by a previous answerer, that is not allowed for youngsters under 21 at home, for instance, etc.

They look for what they think best for them. (e.g. Switzerland is best for its hospitality). To learn foreign languages from native speakers. They are curious to have experience living in other countries. They feel proud to absolve their study abroad. Mostly, they think they could have better career possibilities & future afterwards.

To learn another language, culture, way of life, customs, philosophies, etc. And usually because it's legal to drink at 18 outside the states.
It also allows young minds to be aware of how big and different the world really is.

sometimes they may feel that it might enrich job prospects domestically plus enlarge your expereince. it also widens your knowledge base. plus work experience abroad together with education also helps. If you get scholarships plus on campus jobs etc the cost of education is almost free.

They probably go for the experience of being in another country and brushing up on language skills. It also looks good on the records.
