During WW2 women played a vital role in many areas. Many joined the Land Army, which was not only important because most of the men had gone off to war, but also the German U boats were torpedoing our supply ships, so home-grown produce became essential. Others worked in the factories, producing all manner of goods ranging from making ammunition to uniforms to aeroplanes. Then the Women's Voluntary Service (WVS) played a strong support role within the UK. They provided fire fighters, and tea and refreshments when the clear-up took place after a bombing raid, as well as anything else they were called upon to do. The WVS had one million members by 1943. Most were quite elderly as the younger women were in the factories or working on farms. In addition, all three military services were open for women to join - the Army, Air Force and Navy. Women were also appointed as air raid wardens. By 1943, however, the shortage of women in the factories and on land lead to the government stopping women joining the armed forces. They were given a choice of either working on the land or in factories. A number of women were also used as secret agents'; they were members of SOE (Special Operations Executive) and were usually parachuted into occupied France or landed in special Lysander planes. And not least of all, for they kept morale going, women was also extremely important in entertainment. The two most famous female entertainers of the war were Vera Lynn and Gracie Fields. At the end of World War Two, however, women found that the advances they had made within the workplace were greatly reduced when the returning soldiers had to be found jobs and many wanted society to return to normal. Women's roles in WW11 were markedly different to those in WW1 just a quarter of a century earlier.
Then.women had been confined to nursing and charity work and whilst for WW11 these continued they also included the following.
Administration jobs in the armed forces.
Drivers for home based military personnel
Munitions factory workers.
Machinists for military uniforms
Land Girls -responding to the call "Dig for Victory'(The British had learned from WW1 the need for excess home food production.)
There were a small number involved in active service but these were confined to intelligence operations. However there were also a sizeable number who bravely fought in the French Resistance and who lost their lives in doing so
With so many men enlisting for the war, women also found themselves running family businesses and taking on more responsibility generally in their absence
