I know this might seem like a silly thing to ask but really how do babies learn to smile and laugh to show happiness, or to cry when they are distressed? I really don't think they learn it from imitating other people, as a lot of babies cry right after birth.

And whilst we may talk in silly voices and pull funny faces to make amuse them, how do they know how and when to smile? Are we all born knowing certain things? Or are we learning even inside the womb somehow?

This is probably a really silly question and I thank anyone who deigns to answer it. =)

Even though humans brains have evolved to become extremely pliable and adaptable, there still resides some instinct in us that drives our actions, especially when we are first born. Crying is meant to elicit a response from the outside world to provide the newborn with its needs, namely food and protection. Smiling and laughing is also an instinctual response to a pleasureable stimulus. I believe that smiling is a hard-wired response and not necessarily a learned response, since I've witnessed both of my children laughing in their sleep at a much earlier age than they've laughed or smiled whilst awake.

Gas.
They naturally make that face when making a "stinky"
and mom and dad shudder... and everyone else laughs at them
so the babies associate the expression they are making with the
laughter they hear. and do it next time they hear it.
Also... it feels good once you have done it, and the pressure is gone.
So the primitive brain associates a feeling of goodness with it.

as for crying right after birth?
if a guy who weighed 180 pounds more than you, picked you
up by your feet, turned you upside down, and slapped you.
....any creature would cry......
anyway... at that point you are wet anyway... so it comes natural
and to scream? well... your lungs were full of fluid..... and when he
hit you.. all the water flew out... and air rushed in..... well.....
the air had to come back out too.....
so why not as fast and as forceful as when it went in?

I think that we are just born with (god instilled in us) kinda like animals are born to know what to do.kittens know to knead to nurse the mother,or use the litter box.Turtles know to go to the water as soon as they are born.birds know to migrate south and come back exactly the way they went. All these are just a example of the miracle of life that we are all born with.I know it is not the answer you were looking for but I don't think we will get that answer,

the baby lion hides when in danger when the mother is not arround and never mingle with other lion from another pride

Natural instrinct makes them behave the way they do. They smile when happy and comfortable and cry when not, so that their mothers would quickly get them into comfortable and happy state to ensure they stop crying.
